Postcolonial Readings of Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing

Nineteenth-century travel writing produced the imperial periphery as an object of knowledge at the same time as it claimed merely to describe it. This essay applies postcolonial critical method to a selection of Victorian travel narratives, and argues that the genre's characteristic rhetorical move — the shift from observation to generalisation — is where its ideological work is done.
